Officer of the Cameroon National Order of Merit to the outgoing Defence Adviser of Nigeria to Cameroon, Navy Captain Mohammed Sani Garba. The Nigerian High Commissioner to Cameroon, Philip Ali Dauda in appreciation of the award said, ??this day would go down in the annals of the history of Nigeria-Cameroon relations as a special one??. He specified, ??this gesture therefore, is yet another litmus test and a clear demonstration of the resolve, commitment and genuine disposition of the Cameroonian leadership for a robust cooperation between Nigeria and this country??. The Nigerian diplomat in justifying the need of forging closer military cooperation said, ??Nigeria and Cameroon have no alternative to peaceful co-existence as geographical bonds have destined the two countries to share one of the longest common land and maritime boundaries in Africa??. Consequently, Philip Ali Dauda stated, ??cooperation, especially in the armed forces domain is sine qua non to achieving the desires of the countries to safeguard the security concerns of their common waters in particular and the Gulf of Guinea in general??. On specific aspects of military cooperation, Cameroon Defence Minister, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo??o said ties between Cameroon and Nigeria have been diversified and strengthened in the area of training in recent years. He said two Nigerian senior military officers have just completed training within the framework of the fourth batch of the Yaounde Combined War College. This came to reciprocate a place Nigeria granted last year to one Cameroon senior military officer for a professional course at the National Defence College, Abuja. For the 2009-2010 year, the Defence boss said, Nigeria has also granted two places to Cameroon senior military officers in the National Defence College. He said within the framework of the programme?? Consolidating African unity through socio-economic and military cooperation??, 28 students and officials from the Nigerian Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, from April 25 to May 02, 2009 paid a study visit to Cameroon. The Nigerian High Commissioner corroborating the deepening of military cooperation said the Chief of Defence Intelligence of Nigeria, Major General Mohammed Said undertook a working visit to Cameroon from May 27-29, 2009 during which he discussed the urgent need of putting in place of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the creation of a Joint Security and Patrol Committee to address security concerns between the two countries.
