Work is underway at the monument site to give it a face-lift ahead of the 50th anniversaries of Cameroon??s independence and reunification. In prelude to the 50th anniversaries celebration of Cameroon??s independence and reunification, the Yaounde Urban Council is at the moment carrying out renovation work at the independence monument in front of the National Social Insurance main building, to give it a beautiful and new look. According to authorities from the council, the place will remain the independence monument while future plans are underway to construct a monument that will reflect the 50th anniversaries of the

country??s independence and reunification. Work at the independence monument is expected to be completed before 20th May this year. The Director of Technical Services at the Yaounde Urban Council, Arnaud Philippe Ndzana, said it is important to refurbish the independence monument to make it eye-catching before celebrations marking the independence and reunification anniversaries of the country. At the moment, bulldozers have cleared the monument site of all that used to be within it. The old pavements will be renewed, flowers will be planted within the monument and the chairs that use to serve as sitting grounds for the population will be removed. The Director of Technical Services at the Yaounde Urban Council said palm trees found within the monument will be maintained. Talking about the effigy within the independence monument, Arnaud Philippe Ndzana said at the moment it is not certain if the old statue will be maintained or removed. But if the current statue has to be changed, Arnaud Philippe Ndzana noted ??it is not part of the work carried out by the contractor working on the site presently??. The current statue at the independence monument is that of a happy man which according to sources at the Yaounde Urban Council, symbolises a happy Cameroon at independence.
