Delegations from the UN agencies and the NEPAD held their second consultative meeting in Douala last Wednesday. Delegates from diverse UN agencies and the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) who met last Wednesday 11th at the Sawa hotel in Douala to evaluate the progress of the consultative meeting held at Malabo, on April 2009, to support the development agenda of the African Union and the NEPAD for countries of the central African economic and monetary commission (CEMAC) say there is visible progress in various spheres. According to the CEMAC sub regional bureau director, Mamadou Hachim Koumaré, remarkable achievement has been made by the different partners to link the
CEMAC countries by road.??The CEMAC region is basically agriculture oriented, and definitely deserves support to boost production and also adequate road network to transport produce to various markets within the sub region and beyond,?? Mr. Hachim said. He added that a synergy among different development partners, including the African Union, the UNO and the NEPAD was necessary in order to avoid duplications and waste. In his exposé, the director of the African Development Bank (ADB), Jouad Gharbi, said the ADB has envisaged the sum of FCFA 450 billion to support various projects, including agriculture, road infrastructure, trade, portable water and electricity, in the CEMAC sub region between 2009 and 2013. He noted that the CEMAC countries deserves the support of the ADB because of the relative peace which reigns in the sub region, the consciousness of various countries about climate change and environmental protection, and the tenacity with which the CEMAC nations adjusted to the global financial slow down. ??Despite these efforts, the CEMAC zone remains one in which more than 45 per cent of its population still live on less than 1 US dollar per day,?? the ADB boss noted. ??Our main goal therefore is to poverty by reinforcing the sub regional integration program, which entails the construction of industries and easy movement of goods, people and services.??
