Prime Minister Philemon Yang chaired an inter-ministerial meeting on the accidents on Tuesday September 2. Since the occurrence of railway accidents in Yaounde on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August in which six Cameroonians lost their lives, the government has taken a series of measures to
console and calm the bereaved families and ensure the free treatment of victims who sustained injuries. When news of the accident was made public, President Paul Biya, on vacation in France, promptly addressed a message of condolence to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. He also instructed that all those who sustained serious injuries be treated free of charge. As a follow-up to these actions Prime Minister, Philemon Yang summoned an inter-ministerial meeting on September 2 to discuss the accidents. The meeting, which also involved senior management officials of CAMRAIL, examined the fate of injured passengers, the damage incurred, measures to check the re-occurrence of such accidents in future and the opening of investigations to determine the causes of the accidents. The public has welcomed the opening of investigations especially as some acts of sabotage were reported on the railway line at Edea where some 750 metres of rail were removed by unknown persons between the villages of Logbadjeck and Logbayi. CAMRAIL officials have however ruled out any link between the accidents in Yaounde and the reported acts of sabotage.
