The Head of State in Paris yesterday granted audiences to Professor Luc Montagnier and Claude Peyron of the Groupe Thales. President Paul Biya yesterday in Paris continued with the series of audiences he began last Saturday. The President granted audiences to two top personalities during which he had exchanges on the state of efforts to curb HIV in
Cameroon while on the other hand strengthening partnership with the Groupe Thales. First to be received in audience at 11: 00 a.m. (Paris time) was the co-discoverer of the HIV virus, Professor Luc Montagnier. The AIDS researcher told the press after the audience that the over 30 minutes discussions with President Paul dwelled on the state of diseases such as HIV pandemic which is still ravaging the population in spite of efforts made on its treatment. Professor Luc Montagnier explained that those suffering from HIV are severely touched by other opportunistic diseases. As such his goal now is to look for ways through which people can live with the HIV virus without having too many other infections. ??My objective is to find ways to eradicate other infections especially as some of the viruses resist treatment and hide in some body tissues??, Prof. Montagnier noted. So far, the HIV scientist says some progress has been made to identify the nature of the virus which still resists treatment. However, Professor Montagnier adds that there is hope to eradicate the HIV virus. As the President of the scientific committee of the Chantal Biya International Research Centre on HIV, Professor Montagnier threw light on the paediatric HIV vaccine project of which the clinical phase is moving on smoothly and there are new means to detect new viruses. Another personality received in audience by President Paul Biya yesterday morning was Claude Peyron, Director of International Affairs of Groupe Thales.
