Cameroon – Controversy: Has The Catholic Church Banned A Requiem Mass For Late Belinga Eboutou?

An informant has revealed that the Yaoundé Ecclesiastical Province has issued a decision banning a requiem mass organised for late Minister, Director of Civil Cabinet, Martin Belinga Eboutou at the Mvolyé Minor Basilica.

A source within the circles of the church, says the decision was taken in relation to a request from the family to the church.

Another source claims the Presidency wants the service to take place at the Cathedral in Sangmelima, South region, quoting that the Bishop of Sangmelima was recently at the Presidency for same topic.

This discussion has been animating debates over social media as some have linked reports of the involvement of late Belinga in the murder of late Bishop of Bafia, His Grace, Jean-Marie Benoît Balla.

A video, posted on social media last year, portrayed Mr. Belinga Eboutou as the suspected sponsor to the murder of the Bishop. It was reported that the last call the Bishop received on the same day reportedly committed suicide, came from the former director of the Civil cabinet.

The mystery behind the dead of Bishop Balla, is yet to be unraveled. Many theories surround his killing and this could have provoked tension between the church and the regime. No official statement has been made by the church on this burial plan.

The former a Director of Civil Cabinet at the Presidency of the Republic, Martin Belinga Eboutou, died in Geneva Switzerland on 8th May 2019 at the age of 79, after suffering from a protracted illness. He was a graduate at the Academy of International Law and also the International Institute of Public Administration in Paris, France.

However, his family has released a burial program which runs from Thursday June 6 to Saturday June 8.

His corspe arrives the Yaoundé-Nsimalen airport on Thursday, where a religious service will take place, before the funeral van moves to Zoétélé in the South region. At least three religious services have been programmed to accompany the corpse till Saturday.

Mr. Belinga, a close ally to President Pau Biya died on the 8th of May in Geneva, Switzerland.
