Cameroon – 2019 Population Census: Experts Say Over 25.5 Million People Live In Cameroon

A 2019 World Population report, was presented this Tuesday May 7, at the nation’s capital Yaoundé, with Cameroon emerging 54th in the world.

A team of experts from the United Nations Population Fund who conducted the census says Cameroon now has over 25.5 million inhabitants, with Douala being the most populated.

As of last February, the World population exceeds 7.5 Billion people, with China being the most populous country, followed by India and the United States of America.

By January, Cameroon’s population was estimated at 25.31 million, which went quite above what was substantially obtained at the 2002 census population of 17.4 million.

Cameroon’s 54th position has been maintained this February, at same time places the country as the 17th most populous country in Africa itself.

Yaoundé’s population is over 2.5 million, which makes it the second largest city in the country after Douala, which has more than 3 million residents. Douala is the 27th most expensive city on earth, and the most expensive African city. The population of both towns has increased again, due to the influx of internally displaced persons from the South West and North West regions. Over 1850 people have died in the English speaking regions, due to the current sociopolitical unrest.

Attacks from Islamist militants, Boko Haram in the Far-North has also affected population status in Cameroon. Late night raids by the group have seen many migrating to the nation’s capital or the economic capital.

The total population in Cameroon was estimated at 24.5 million people in 2017. Looking back, in the year of 1960, Cameroon had a population of 5.2 million people. The above statistics indicate Cameroon keeps growing despite all odds, in terms of population.
