The Constitutional Council : Eleven appointed to protect the laws of the land

The Presidential decree of 7th February 2018 effectively puts in place the Constitutional Council of Cameroon created by Law No 96/06 of 18th January 1996 on the constitutional revision of 2nd June 1972.
The establishment of the organ which some refer to, as a “Council for the wise” rules on the constitutionality of the law.
It is a regulatory organ that works within a number of domains including;
#Conflicts involving institutions of the state, the state and regions finally between regions.
#Internal regulations of the National Assembly and Senate
#The Constitutional Council also rules on the constitutionality of law, treaties and international agreement to protect the state against international interference which can sometimes be in violation of state sovereignity.
Section 48 of the revised law makes provision for the council overseeing the regularity of Presidential and Legislative elections and also referandums.
It is the Council that proclaims the results of the above elections.
The informed class in Cameroon salutes the putting in place of the ” Council for the wise” expected to reinforce power separation between the executive, legislative, judicial and even local authorities
Sceptics however hold that the Constitutional Council is a body at crossroads between the legal and political arena.
However, the eleven appointed to sit within the Constitutional Council are well known personalities, most of whom have gained national acclaim.
