The Martinez Zogo case is making headlines due to the rapid progress of the investigation into Martinez Zogo's assassination.
In the next few hours, new developments are expected. Paul Biya discreetly entrusted Israel with the conduct of a parallel investigation following the discovery of the body of Martinez Zogo. Police and gendarmerie investigations quickly showed that the assassination of Martinez Zogo was the work of professionals with control, surveillance and protection tools. The investigators then began to take an interest in the security services.
The Director of Presidential Security, Ivo Descencio, met Paul Biya to let it be known that he was not involved in the assassination of Martinez Zogo and that he wanted the truth to be established. The Israeli report implicated elements of the General Directorate of External Research (DGRE). The boss of the police, Mbarga Nguele, informed Paul Biya that he could not carry out the investigation to avoid any suspicion of impartiality and wished a joint investigation with the gendarmerie.
On January 27, 2023, Paul Biya authorized a mixed police-gendarmerie investigation supervised by the gendarmerie. On January 31, 2023, investigators arrested two elements of the DGRE, including Colonel Justin Danwe, suspected of being the mastermind of the operations. The boss of the DGRE, Maxime Eko Eko, was also summoned and interviewed all night. On February 1, 2023, several officials from the DGRE's operations department were summoned for a hearing.
The DGRE denies any involvement for the moment and no search or arrest warrant has been issued. A confrontation is planned soon between the head of the DGRE, Maxime Eko Eko, and the director of operations of the DGRE, Justin Danwe.
