Revenue collectors of Councils in the Centre and South Regions, Tuesday, August 16, 2011 in Yaounde began a three-day workshop organised to train them on ways of better managing council finances and accounts. The Audit Bench of the Supreme Court launched the series of workshops in Yaounde that will be extended to cover council revenue collectors in all regions of Cameroon. The President of the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court, Marc Ateba Ombala chaired the opening
ceremony of the workshop. Mr Ateba Ombala said the workshops were intended to correct the recurrent default in the production of general documents of management accounts and absence or insufficient support documents that do not guarantee their regularity. The 2009 annual report of the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court presented in Yaounde, July 17, 2011, revealed that council revenue collectors produced only 16.5 percent of the accounts. Training of council revenue collectors was one of the key recommendations in the report to ensure efficiency in all stages of producing financial and accounting management accounts of the councils.
Speaking during the occasion, Marc Ateba Ombala said the workshop was part of the ongoing programme to improve the management of public finances launched in 2007. The training of council revenue collectors on the financial and accounting management of councils is organised with the support of the European Union. The participants are expected to better understand relations between them and other stakeholders in council management, all processes of the council budget, budget execution and law on financing of local councils. They will also learn the council sector accounting plan, production and handling of the accounts, auditing of council accounts and sanctions meted out to accountants.
