Cameroon: Dangerous NeglectRecent research shows that there has been a five per cent improvement in the rate of child vaccinations in Cameroon over the last seven years. In 2004, only 48 per cent of babies were said to have been fully vaccinated. But a survey carried out between January and August 2011 in some 15,000 households indicates that the level of vaccination for children from zero to nine months increased from 48 per cent in 2004 to 53 per cent in 2011.

When Beliefs, Prejudices Hinder Vaccination in CameroonOnly 53 per cent of babies from 15,000 surveyed households received complete vaccination in the country this year.
The figures have increased but health officials say much remains to be done. In 2004, only 48 per cent of babies were fully vaccinated. A study carried out between January and August 2011, revealed an increase of five per cent. In effect, performance has moved from 48 per cent in 2004 to 53 per cent in 2011. Officials in charge of vaccination say the battle is fierce and yet to be won as they intend to move to 90 per cent.

C'est en ces termes que Ousmane Guindo, représentant de la FAO au Cameroun, justifie l'appui apporté vendredi dernier aux Centres d'accueil de l'espoir à Yaoundé. Cholera: National Contingency Plan Under Study in CamerounExperts in the fight against cholera met in Yaounde last Friday to evaluate the draft document pending its final validation.
Cameroon has been hit by cholera epidemics for several decades. The most recent epidemic which began in the Far North Region on May 6, 2010 has already affected 10,759 people, killing 657 others. Statistics from the Ministry of Public Health reveal that from January 1 to October 26 2011, a total of 20,320 cases have been reported thus 745 cases for a mortality rate of 3,7 percent. Since September 2011, an increase has been recorded in certain regions of the country despite efforts. In order to render more efficient government's efforts in the fight against cholera, a National Contingency Plan for the Prevention and Fight against Cholera has been drafted.
