President Biya Honours Congolese Golden Jubilee The Head of State, Paul Biya and wife, Chantal Biya were actively present alongside several African leaders in Brazzaville for the 50th Anniversary celebration of the independence of Congo.
President Paul Biya and wife Chantal Biya left Brazzaville; capital of the Republic of Congo yesterday at 1p.m. after three days full of activity. Variety, fanfare, excitement and splendour can best qualify the visit during which the Cameroonian Head of State and First Lady, also met with their African counterparts who were in Congo for the 50 Anniversary celebration of the independence of the country. Prior to the jubilee festivities on August 15, President Biya and wife, Chantal joined their counterparts of Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sao Tome and Principe as well as the host, President, Denis Sassou N'Guesso at the Alphonse Massamba-Debat Sports complex for a cultural evening shortly after their arrival in Brazzaville on August 14. The cultural event kept the high-profile audience delighted with several displays that recalled the historical evolution of Congo. 

Over 1,500 young girls in a typical Chinese acrobatic displays and cultural dance groups depicting the rich diversity of Congo as well as a film projection carefully blended to bring out the history of Congo to the august guests of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the country. Elated President Paul Biya and wife, Chantal Biya could not help clapping incessantly to the fantastic demonstrations by the young Congolese actors and actresses.

The two-hour cultural manifestations turned out simply to be a foretaste of what President Denis Sassou N'Guesso had in stock for his guests who kept increasing as the final act of Congo's 50 years of Independence approached. A mini-African Union Summit took place in Brazzaville judging from the number of Heads of State present at the Alfred Raoul Avenue down town Brazzaville where the venue of the 50th anniversary activities.

Besides President Paul Biyal and Chantal Biya, Denis Sassou N'Guesso also had other Heads of State; Armanda Rupiah Banda of Zambia and wife, José Edouado Dos Santos of Angola, Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso and wife, Idriss Deby Itno of Chad and wife, Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal and wife, Joseph Kabila of neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and wife, Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires of the Republic of Cape Verde, Amadou Toumani Toure of Mali and wife, François Bozzize of the Central African Republic and wife, Fradique Melo de Menezes of Sao Tome and Principé, Faure Nyasingbe of Togo, Thomas Yayi Boni of the Republic of Benin and wife as well as Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba of Gabon and wife. They all filed into the official grand stand to watch the military and civilian march-past that characterised the Anniversary celebration. In all, 14 Heads of State, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Meles Zinawi, including the Vice President of Nigeria formed part of the dignitaries that honoured President Sassou's invitation for the 50 years of the Independence of Congo.{module Publicité 300_250|none}

To get Congolese fully participate in the epoch-marking event, President Sassou N'Guesso handed a symbolic batten of command to the youths having taken it from the generation delivered 50 years ago. He also awarded various national medals to Congolese who have distinguished themselves in the service of their fatherland including all former five heads of State of Congo.

The military in a splendid march-past that marked one of the major highlights of the celebration saw army contingents from Congo and foreign countries like Angola, Cameroon, France, Gabon, Libya, Morocco and Benin. The army unit from the military headquarters in Yaounde led by Major Dieudonné Mbarga Atangana assisted by Lietenant Bina Mvondo not only raised the Cameroonian flag high but put up a fascinating show.

Later in the evening President Paul Biya joined the other leaders present in Congo for another anniversary show, this time a sumptuous state banquet at the Presidential palace in Brazzaville which ended the day's activities.
